The Twic Mayardit football team was crowned the champion of the 3rd edition of the Warrap State Peace Tournament after narrowly defeating Tonj North 2–1 in a thrilling final held at Buluk Playground in Juba on Saturday.
This victory solidified Twic Mayardit’s status as champions of the annual event, which promotes unity and peace through sports.
Deng Dut Parek, the chairperson of the Warrap State Peace Tournament, expressed appreciation to the administration of Buluk Playground for providing the venue for the tournament since its inception in 2021.
He congratulated the Twic Mayardit football team on their victory and urged the youth who participated in the tournament to continue advocating for peace and reconciliation in their communities.
Deng also praised the six teams from Warrap State that participated in the tournament, along with the coaches for their dedication to ensuring the tournament’s success.
“The purpose of organising this event is simply to bring social harmony to our community in Warrap State. The leadership of the Warrap State Peace Tournament has decided to create friendly competitions to promote sportsmanship, understanding, respect, and unity among all participants and spectators,” Parek told journalists.
He added that the winners of the Warrap State Peace Tournament would receive awards of 25 million SSP for first place, 15 million SSP for second place, and 10 million SSP for third place.
Parek also thanked the sponsors and volunteers for their contributions to the success of the Warrap State Peace Tournament.
Simon Akuei Deng, the commissioner general of the NRA and the chief guest at the finals, encouraged the Warrap State community to remain committed to sports, as it is a viable avenue for fostering peace and unity among the youth.
He urged both Twic Mayardit players and their counterparts from Tonj North to continue working hard and uphold the true values of sportsmanship.
Gen Bona Panek Biar, managing director of the South Sudan Pension Fund, commended the Warrap State community for organising this tournament, which primarily aims to foster peace and reconciliation among various communities.
He encouraged the youth and the entire community of Warrap State to continue organising such tournaments, which could inspire other communities in the country to undertake similar peace initiatives.
