The spokesperson for the South Sudan National Police Service has confirmed that three suspects were apprehended following a high-profile attack on a senior police officer last month.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Police Spokesperson Maj. Gen. James Monday Enoka stated that the campaign aims to restore public trust and ensure the safety of citizens.
“This press briefing is to highlight the achievements of the police in cracking down on criminals operating in Juba and across South Sudan,” said Maj. Gen. Enoka. “We remain committed to safeguarding lives and property.”
The crackdown follows a violent attack on 30 July 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., when suspected criminals stormed the residence of Maj. Gen. Stephen Worikozi Zakaria in the Gudele area. During the incident, the suspects shot the general in the leg and injured two other individuals before fleeing with valuables, including an undisclosed amount of money.
In response to the attack, police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
“Three of the six suspects were apprehended after intensive investigations,” Enoka said. “During the arrest, the suspects exchanged gunfire with CID officers. One suspect was shot in the leg and later died in the hospital.”
Maj. Gen. Enoka also appealed to the public to cooperate with law enforcement by sharing information that could help prevent future crimes.
“We call on the general public to continue cooperating with us,” he said. “Your information is vital in helping us maintain security in our communities.”
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Zakaria, who survived the attack, expressed gratitude to the police for their swift response.
“I appreciate the efforts of the police, especially the Central Equatoria State CID, for apprehending the suspected criminals,” said Zakaria. “Their commitment shows that the police are genuinely concerned about protecting our lives and property.”
