British Ambassador to South Sudan, David Ashley, has pledged the UK’s support for peace and unity initiatives in the country.
Speaking to the press at Rumbek Airport on Tuesday following his arrival, he praised the progress made under Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor in restoring peace among communities in Lakes State.
“The government of Britain has been working closely to support ministries, including Peacebuilding, Health, and Education. This has genuinely encouraged people to be productive in their daily lives across the country. Peace has to begin with you and be disseminated to the wider population,” said Ashley.
The Ambassador was received by state government officials, including Mathiang Deng Monydit, Minister of Cabinet Affairs; Mabor Meen Wol, Minister of Local Government; Nyanhok Malou Marial, Minister of Peacebuilding; and Mary Arun Chol, area coordinator for the Peace Canal.
Mary Arun Chol confirmed that H.E. Ambassador David will be taken to the camps to understand how the Peace Canal programme promotes peace in Lakes State.
Chol noted that random cattle migration, which has caused communal disputes, is currently being mitigated. The Peace Canal has been operating among the Agar communities, including Kuei, Rup, Pakam, and greater Aliamtoc.
Ambassador David will evaluate and confirm the stability of peace in Lakes State alongside the state government, focusing on grassroots perspectives.
