The Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Lakes State, Mr. Abraham Chol Bolek, has warned that six counties, including Awerial, Yirol West, Yirol East, Rumbek East, Rumbek Centre, and Cueibet, may experience severe flooding similar to last year’s devastation.

” As the chairperson of the RRC, I would like to express my gratitude to humanitarian agencies such as WFP and Plan International, which provide essential  food and non-food items to the affected population.  The state government is committed to maintaining the stability of peace restored by Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor. We aim to reorganise pastoralists to migrate their cattle to higher ground peacefully, thereby avoiding conflicts with farmers. This will foster tranquil coexistence among the population,” Bolek told the press yesterday in Rumbek, the state capital of Lakes State.

Bolek said that the state taskforce committee, headed by Stephen Mathiang Deng Monydit, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, will soon target high-risk areas prone to flooding, particularly lowlands, to raise awareness among residents.

He noted that informative responses are expected to be implemented by humanitarian agencies for the affected population.

He expressed gratitude to the World Food Programme (WFP) for contracting Plan International to distribute food and cash to vulnerable people in anticipation of the impending flooding.

However, Bolek urged unemployed youths with university qualifications to remain vigilant, as some organisations, including Nonviolent Peaceforce, Save the Children, and the International Rescue Committee (IRC), have officially closed down in Rumbek.

“The RRC will continue to oversee and follow the legal procedures regarding how NGOs recruit youths for employment,” he added.
