"We Dare where others fear"

The Chairperson of the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in Jonglei State, Michael Mading Akueth, announced that the government is coordinating with partners to evacuate those affected by floods across the state.
“When the rains began, the counties along the Nile experienced significant displacement, starting in August in Fangak and Wernyol in Twic East. The total number of displaced individuals is approximately 47,000,” said Akueth during a press briefing on Tuesday.
“We are still coordinating with partners to evacuate these individuals. Local authorities are taking them to higher ground; however, in Fangak County, there is no high ground available, so we require boats to transport these people to safety,” he explained.
Akueth emphasised the government’s commitment to working closely with humanitarian partners, civil society, and development organisations to ensure a coordinated, timely, and people-centred response to the flood situation.
He revealed that flooding is widespread in Jonglei State, particularly in counties along the Nile River, due to heavy rains and rising water levels, which have caused massive displacement.
“In Twic East, about 15,500 people are affected, with 30 percent of that population displaced. In Fangak, around 20,000 have been reported displaced across many villages. In Bor County, those displaced are able to cohabit with the local communities,” he noted.
“The most affected counties are Fangak, Twic East, parts of Ayod, Bor County, Duk, and Akobo County. We are still gathering reports from all over the state. People in Fangak, Twic East, and Akobo are in urgent need of support,” he added.
In Jonglei State, there is a growing demand from flood-affected victims, who are calling on the transitional government and aid agencies to assist them in addressing their urgent health and humanitarian needs.
