President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday, instructed the newly appointed Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Joseph Geng Akech, to prioritise the delivery of fair and impartial justice to the people of South Sudan.
According to a statement from the presidential press unit posted on its Facebook page, “President Kiir directed the newly appointed Minister of Justice, Dr. Joseph Geng Akech, to focus on reforming the justice system to ensure fair and impartial justice for the people of South Sudan.”
President Kiir also emphasised to appointed officials the importance of diligently fulfilling the mandates of their institutions, stating that leadership should be viewed not as a privilege but as an opportunity to serve the people of South Sudan.
“From today, serve the people and not yourself,” President Kiir declared during the swearing-in ceremony, urging newly appointed officials to uphold integrity and commitment in their service.
His call for integrity, accountability, and people-centred leadership highlights his administration’s broader objectives of restoring public trust and promoting peace and development in South Sudan.
Additionally, President Kiir instructed Sherif Daniel Sherif, the new governor of Western Bahr El Ghazal state, to work towards restoring peace and reconciling communities to facilitate sustainable development in the state.
The newly appointed officials were sworn in before President Salva Kiir Mayardit by Chief Justice Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng, who administered the oath of office at a ceremony on Wednesday.
Dr. Geng was sworn in alongside four other officials: Mary Nawai Martin, the Minister of Youth and Sports; Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs; Sherif Daniel Sherif, the Governor of Western Bahr El Ghazal state; and Sarah Peter Nyot, the Counsel General in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
In a decree read on state-owned television on Monday, President Salva Kiir dismissed Wek Mamer Kuol as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and appointed him as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, succeeding Mary Nawai Martin.
Joseph Geng Akech, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, was appointed as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, with Mary Nawai Martin taking over his previous role in Youth and Sports.
