President Salva Kiir Mayardit has delegated Josephine Josep Lagu, Vice President for the Service Cluster, to lead a high-level delegation to the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York, United States, as confirmed by an official.

President Salva Kiir last represented South Sudan at the General Assembly in September 2014 and has since been delegating his deputies: Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Taban Deng Gai, former VP Abdelbagi Hussein Akol, and Dr. James Wani Igga.

Ambassador Apuk Ayuel Mayen, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that VP Lagu is expected to depart Juba in the coming weeks for the summit in New York.

“His Excellency President General Salva Kiir Mayardit convened a meeting with Her Excellency Joseph Lagu, Vice President and Chair of the Service Cluster, and the Honourable Ambassador Monday Semaya K. Kumba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, ahead of their departure to lead the government delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York,” Mayen stated during a weekly media briefing in Juba on Thursday.

She highlighted that VP Josephine Lagu will represent South Sudan in crucial sessions, emphasising the country’s commitment to multilateralism, peace, and sustainable development.

“Under the leadership of His Excellency the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation continues to advance South Sudan’s foreign policy agenda.

This year’s United Nations General Assembly will be held under the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”

The gathering, organised by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development, will bring together first ladies, policymakers, global advocates, youth leaders, and partners to promote collective action aimed at protecting and empowering women and girls in climate-affected and conflict-prone settings.

At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), global leaders will convene to build consensus and tackle complex global challenges.

Leaders will discuss how integrated, people-centred primary health care can strengthen health systems, improve access to diagnostics and treatment, address non-communicable diseases, mental health, and infectious diseases, and advance universal health coverage.
