Youth leaders from Bor, Twic East, Duk, and Akobo counties have participated in the International Peace Day celebration organised by the Greater Pibor Administrative Area and the civil affairs division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan in Pibor.
David Ngiro Yangkon, chairperson of the Murle Community Youth Association, stated that the celebration of the International Day of Peace by youth from various communities in Pibor has strengthened peace efforts among them.
“The celebration serves as a peace retreat, allowing us as youth to engage with the mechanisms we can employ to foster peace. It is a peace rally aimed at restoring harmony among our people,” Yangkon explained in an interview.
“It is fundamentally about peace initiatives and the accomplishments we, as youth leaders, are achieving for our community and the country as a whole. It is about our engagement to bring peace to our people,” he added.
According to a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, the youth leaders from Jonglei State travelled to the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to engage in dialogue.
“The joint peace mission to Pibor aims to end the series of armed confrontations between youth from Pibor and those from Jonglei. The youth leaders who travelled to Pibor include the chairpersons of the Twic, Bor, Duk, and Lou Nuer Youth Associations,” the statement from Pibor said.
Yangkon further remarked that the International Peace Day celebration, organised by the Greater Pibor Administrative Area with support from the civil affairs division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, marked a historic moment for the youth leaders and their communities.
“The peace celebration also signals for youth leaders to communicate with their peers, ensuring that we all coexist peacefully. We are genuinely striving to achieve peace within our communities,” he concluded.
