The Executive Director of The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), a Juba-based civil society organisation, Ter Manyang Gatwech, on Thursday welcomed the release of 74 bodyguards of Dr. Riek Machar, describing it as a positive step toward peace, reconciliation, and national healing.
On September 24, 2025, 72 bodyguards of suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar were released from the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) detention facility at Giada in Juba, where they had been held for 178 days.
Machar’s security team had been in custody since March of this year. One of the detainees, Luka Gathok, passed away while in custody.
Ter Manyang Gatwech, executive director of CPA, stated that this is a positive development in transitioning from a history of conflict and negative perceptions to one of peace and stability.
“This release is a clear indication that our country is moving from a history of conflict and negative perceptions toward a future of peace and stability—something every citizen longs for,” Gatwech said in a statement issued on Thursday.
An outspoken human rights activist highlighted the urgent need for lasting peace, justice, and democratic governance in South Sudan, stating that the release of these personnel represents an important step forward.
“This is not just about the release of individuals; it’s about restoring hope, promoting human rights, strengthening the rule of law, and building a culture of accountability. It is a symbol of progress toward a more peaceful and inclusive South Sudan.”
Gatwech urged all stakeholders, including the government, opposition, civil society, and international partners, to maintain their support for peace initiatives and to respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens.
“I urge the nation to maintain this spirit of reconciliation and commitment to justice so that every South Sudanese can fully enjoy their human rights under the rule of law.”
