Senior four candidates resumed sitting for the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination in Yei Day Secondary School after they held protest over the toughness of the examination.
The protest occurred during the Chemistry and History exams on Friday in Yei River County of Central Equatoria State.
Bingo Bokilo Francis, head teacher of Yei Day Secondary School said the candidates have resumed writing their Chemistry and History exams after the intervention of the police and county authorities.
“It is very embarrassing and quite absurd, it has never happened in Yei. It is happening for the first time and my message to learners is to let them work hard,” said Francis.
He said the exams were set within the syllabus taught to the students.
“Exams are set within the Syllabus and what has been taught to them but they have not been concentrating and that is why the see papers are very tough,” said Francis.
“These papers were not set from heaven or out of the blue; these papers were just set from the coverage. I urge students who will have similar views to desist from this barbaric act.”
Aggrey Cyrus Kanyikwa, Commissioner for Yei River County said they will probe the circumstances that led to the riot after exams.
“For the purpose of us not obstructing their rights for examinations, we allowed them to sit and not to interfere with sitting procedures but they will be investigated, they are only two people,” said Cyrus.
Simon Nyok Deng Secretary General of the National Examination Council said the situation has turned to normal after they directed local authorities of Yei River County to handle it.
“We have received the report and we have directed the local authority in Yei to come that down and let them continue with their exams. So that has been solved now,” said Nyok
About 45,000 students are sitting for their Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations which started Monday.
Among them, 28,000 are males and 16,600 females who are expected to complete their exams on 14 December 2023.
Yei was well known for Academic Excellence. Government authorities should curb down the rampant abuse of drugs.
There’s need for Mass sensitization of students.
