CEPO urges President Kiir to push for inclusive dialogue among warring parties in Sudan

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has called on President Salva Kiir to take advantage of the appointment of Lawrence Korbandy, as the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) envoy to Sudan to push for dialogue among the warring parties.

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has called on President Salva Kiir to take advantage of the appointment of Lawrence Korbandy, as the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) envoy to Sudan to push for dialogue among the warring parties.

“It is time for the political leadership in South Sudan to engage with the Sudan file in strategic manner, Sudan peace mediation should be serious and inclusively for gaining genuine peace that focuses at securing durable and sustainable solutions for Sudan political crisis,” Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director for CEPO said in a statement issued in Juba on Tuesday.

 “Political leadership in South Sudan should now take a step of developing strategic approach towards peace and stability in the Republic of Sudan,” he disclosed.

Yakani said South Sudan’s peace and stability is intertwined with stability in neighboring Sudan.

He urged Lawrence Korbandy, IGAD envoy to Sudan to take proactive action to ensure Sudan regains its diplomatic status in IGAD.

“Any attempt of peace mediation should be inclusive with meaningful participation of various actors of Sudan. CEPO is urging the Sudanese conflicting parties to take primary responsibility of making peace and stability possible in the country,” Yakani said.       

Since the conflict between the SAF and the RSF broke out on April 15, 2023, 14,790 fatalities have been recorded, while the number of people displaced inside and outside of Sudan has reached 8.2 million, according to recent estimates by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
