The Governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, Simon Ober Mawut, on Saturday presided over the launch of a drainage system in Aweil town to mitigate recurring floods.

The government-led initiative aims to reduce the risk of flooding and prevent floodwaters from affecting residential areas and vital infrastructure in the state.

It was launched under the theme “Working together for a sustainable flood control.”

“The level of flooding witnessed last year was unprecedented and historic in scale; such a large amount of water levels had not been seen in this state in the past several decades,” said Mawut during the ceremony in Aweil.

“We can accomplish this objective if we pool our collective ideas and resources together, and there is no doubt that we shall succeed in this endeavor,” he added.

Mawut said the project includes clearing drainage trenches, as well as expanding water canals to enhance the free flow of water to reduce flooding.

“We will use every means necessary to mobilize resources to facilitate the construction of waterways so that our people do not face similar conditions this year and beyond,” he said.

He called upon partners and well-wishers to join hands with the state government in accomplishing this noble cause.

Mawut reiterated the state government’s commitment to mobilize resources to facilitate the construction of waterways to mitigate risks of flooding.

“During the recent flooding, our people lost a considerable amount of property in terms of fallen houses, destroyed crops, and livestock,” he said.

“I am fully aware of the situation our people are currently going through. Many citizens are struggling to meet the daily needs of their families. I urge our fellow citizens to exercise a little patience while we try to find practical and sustainable solutions to what is clearly a recurring challenge,” said Mawut.
