The Acting Governor of Western Equatoria State, Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa has pardoned two inmates in Yambio Central Prison.
The Governor paid a visit to the detention facility last week where he donated food and other basic items such as mattresses to inmates.
“The prisoners are lacking basic necessities such as soap, mattresses and even food. This is unacceptable and we must act,” Badagbu said.
The donation comes amid growing concerns over the poor conditions faced by inmates, many of whom struggle with a lack of basic necessities.
Badagbu also pledged to intervene in the case of an elderly man jailed over a civil dispute involving 1.3 million South Sudanese Pounds.
He said he would seek a report from the presiding judge and explore possible support for the man’s release.
Badagbu also expressed concern over the incarceration of a 14-year-old boy in a case related to the pregnancy of an 18-year-old girl. He promised to look into the matter and ensure justice for detained boy.
In addition, he called for broader judicial reforms across Western Equatoria State, adding that he is committed to working with the Chief Justice of South Sudan to deploy more judges to Yambio, Maridi, Tambura and Mundri.
“The delay in justice is a denial of human rights, and we must address this,” Badagbu said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Yambio Central Prison, Kon Nakor Ajawin appreciated Badagbu’s visit and the donated items which included soap.
“We are very happy with the acting governor of the state for his hospitality, and I am urging the inmates not to escape from the prison because no condition is permanent every individual will be released one day,” Ajawin said.
Badagbu’s visit underscores a growing push by state authorities to improve prison conditions, promote justice, and ensure the protection of basic human rights across Western Equatoria State.
