The cataract surgery was conducted by the Health Department of the Catholic Diocese of Wau from 2018 to 2025 in Greater Bahr el Ghazal.

Speaking During the closing of the 15-day eye care campaign held at St. George Parish in Aweil on Saturday, Dr. Jurel Payii Mamur, Health Coordinator of the Catholic Diocese of Wau, announced that they have restored the vision of 11,475 visually impaired individuals in Greater Bahr el Ghazal.

Mamur stated that they successfully restored the eyesight of 6,178 people in Aweil from 2021 to 2025.

“In Aweil, 6,178 out of 11,475 have undergone successful operations from 2021 to 2025. The remaining 5,297 were operated on in Wau, Raja, Turalei, and Kuajok over the last three years,” he explained.

He also disclosed that they successfully operated on 1,292 patients and conducted 35 ocular surgeries during the campaign held in Aweil from April 28 to May 12, 2025.

“We have also empowered individuals to participate more fully in their communities and contribute to national development, productivity, and improved quality of life.”
