Call for Forgiveness and Release of Emmanuel Monychol Akop

We respectfully appeal to the leadership of South Sudan to show mercy and forgiveness toward Emmanuel Monychol Akop, the editor-in-chief of The Dawn newspaper, who has now spent six months in detention.

We respectfully appeal to the leadership of South Sudan to show mercy and forgiveness toward Emmanuel Monychol Akop, the editor-in-chief of The Dawn newspaper, who has now spent six months in detention.

While some may view his actions or words as controversial or critical, we believe that six months in detention without trial is a punishment that far exceeds any alleged wrongdoing.

Emmanuel has paid a significant personal and professional price due to his health condition, which has impaired his cognitive abilities. The damage to the promising individual we once believed would be an asset to the nation is already evident. It is now time to turn a new page and focus on restoring his well-being so he can return to his family.

Forgiveness is a strength, not a weakness. Releasing Emmanuel would send a powerful message of compassion, national unity, and respect for human dignity. It would demonstrate South Sudan’s commitment to reconciliation and set an example of leadership that values healing over hostility.

We call upon the authorities to extend the hand of forgiveness and allow Emmanuel Monychol to return to his family, his work, and his country—wiser, stronger, and more committed to building a peaceful and democratic South Sudan.

Let us choose grace over grievance. Let us allow Emmanuel to be free.
