He highlighted that government funding has significantly advanced the commission’s election preparations.

Bol detailed that these preparations encompass civic and voter education, safeguarding voter registration materials, and recruiting election personnel, including state returning officers responsible for overseeing the electoral process at the state level.

“The financial support has facilitated our efforts in civic and voter education, protecting electoral materials for voter registration, and recruiting 22,137 election workers, including state returning officers,” Bol stated.

Bol made these comments after attending a roundtable event in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, focused on democracy, media, and socialization in Africa from October 26 to 27, 2026.

During the event, he met with officials from the African Union Peace and Security Council to discuss South Sudan’s electoral preparations and identify areas needing additional support.

“The forum allowed for engagement with media practitioners, electoral experts, and representatives from other election management bodies,” he noted.

“The purpose of the roundtable was to bring together African countries, including those like us that have postponed elections in 2026, as well as others scheduled for elections in 2027.”

Bol emphasized the discussions’ focus on the importance of voter education and ongoing civic education to prepare citizens for participation in the electoral process.

The roundtable also provided a platform for electoral officials, media practitioners, and experts from various African nations preparing for elections to share experiences and best practices.

He pointed out that a key takeaway from the discussions was that democracy extends beyond elections and should be evident in how governments, political parties, and families make decisions.

Oyet Patrick, chairperson of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), expressed a commitment to collaborate closely with the NEC to ensure the public receives accurate information about the electoral process.

“In Addis Ababa, not only the Union of Journalists of South Sudan committed to working closely with the National Election Commission to ensure that we have information, and especially accurate information, going to the public,” Oyet said.

He emphasized the media’s crucial role in communicating the commission’s activities and informing citizens about election preparations, echoing Bol Deng’s description of the media as the “oxygen” of the electoral commission. He argued that without media coverage, the commission’s work would remain unknown to the public.

“The honorable chair said something in Addis Ababa that I would like to repeat: Media is the oxygen. Just as oxygen is vital for humans, the media is essential for the electoral commission. If the media does not report on what the electoral commission does, that information will not reach the public.”

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has recruited 22,137 election workers in preparation for the country’s general elections scheduled for December 2026.

[54,49
48
post-1056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-election","category-news","tag-election
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
