The journey often involved additional transport costs, lost time and difficulties for patients seeking treatment. But a young South Sudanese pharmacist is working to change that experience by bringing essential medicines closer to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 29, Deng Atem Garang, a professional pharmacist and founder of Nile Care Pharmacy, is turning his entrepreneurial dream into a growing business aimed at improving access to medicines while creating employment opportunities for young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating with a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Pharmacy from Fayyum University in Egypt in 2022, Garang began pursuing his ambition of establishing a pharmaceutical business to address gaps in access to essential medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking in an interview in Juba, Garang said his experience working in several pharmacies and a pharmaceutical supply company helped him identify opportunities to improve access to medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have worked in several pharmacies over the last two years, including a medical supply company. Establishing my own pharmacy is a great idea to help close the gap in medication access,&#8221; Garang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The pharmacy is incredibly beneficial to the community, providing essential services and first aid. There are diseases prevalent in the area, and we are committed to bringing in solutions to help treat people,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2026, Garang decided to leave his job at a pharmaceutical company to concentrate on establishing his own business. He partnered with another pharmacist, who provided the startup capital, while the two combined their efforts to establish Nile Care Pharmacy in Shirikat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In January 2026, I decided to resign from my job at the pharmaceutical company to focus on my own ventures. I reached out to a colleague to collaborate on opening a pharmacy,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We came up with a business name, and she provided the startup capital. Together, we established the pharmacy, so patients no longer need to travel from Shirikat across the Nile to obtain medication in Juba.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garang said the decision to establish the pharmacy in Shirikat was informed by the difficulties residents faced accessing medicines in Juba town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Since completing my studies, I have dreamed of opening a pharmacy, and now feels like the right time. Every medication needed in Shirikat is available at Nile Care Pharmacy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that his previous employment did not provide sufficient income to support his ambitions, prompting him to pursue entrepreneurship in an area where he had professional training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond improving access to medicines, Garang hopes to expand Nile Care Pharmacy into a network of pharmaceutical outlets serving communities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We plan to open more branches, as Nile Care Pharmacy is not just one location; it is a group of pharmacies that will offer services including baby supplies, human medications, and cosmetics,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the business currently employs three people, with plans to recruit more workers as it expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garang is currently pursuing a master&#8217;s degree in public health at the University of Juba, combining his pharmaceutical background with broader ambitions to contribute to healthcare delivery in South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, establishing and operating a pharmaceutical business has not been without challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garang identified high rental costs, expensive medicines, unreliable electricity and taxation as some of the difficulties affecting the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We face many challenges in running a pharmaceutical business, including rising rent and medication costs. We strive to keep our prices affordable, but many still find them high,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that maintaining appropriate storage conditions for medicines is another concern, particularly because some pharmaceutical products require reliable electricity and controlled temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nile Care Pharmacy stocks various medicines, including treatments for diabetes and ulcers, alongside baby supplies. According to Garang, its products are sourced from Egypt, Kenya and Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Nile Care is a specialized pharmacy with a diverse array of medications. We provide general medicine, but prices are high due to excessive taxes. The government needs to focus on reducing taxes for essential medical supplies,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garang&#8217;s concerns come as South Sudan continues to face challenges in strengthening its healthcare system and improving access to essential medical supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caretaker Minister of Health, Dak Duop Bichiok, has previously highlighted the importance of collective responsibility and increased domestic investment in healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Health is a collective responsibility. The ministry continues to advocate for increased domestic investment in health and the necessary conditions for sustainable financing of essential health services,&#8221; Bichiok said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For young professionals entering the pharmaceutical sector, businesses such as Nile Care Pharmacy also provide opportunities to gain practical experience and develop their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"758\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/image-6.png 758w, https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/image-6-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adum Deng, an assistant pharmacist as seen, working at Nile Care Pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adum Deng, a pharmacist assistant who previously worked at Etero Pharmacy in Jebel and a pharmaceutical company in Gudele, said joining Nile Care Pharmacy had provided an opportunity to develop her professional skills while serving the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I recently started working at Nile Care Pharmacy, and I&#8217;ve found it to be a well-equipped facility with a wide range of medications. It&#8217;s a great resource for the community,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m learning a lot here, and I can confidently tell people that Nile Care is the best place to find medication. Many drugs that are hard to find in Juba are available at Nile Care,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adum, a graduate of the University of Health Sciences in Khartoum, said her mother&#8217;s encouragement influenced her decision to pursue a career in the medical field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are helping the community. Many people are getting sick from diseases brought in from outside. We must be resilient and not give up; our government needs to create a conducive business environment,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Garang, Nile Care Pharmacy represents more than an entrepreneurial venture.
