South Sudan’s election preparations are drawing concern from civil society, which warns of inadequate civic education, logistical hurdles, and limited legal preparedness. Many communities, particularly in rural areas, remain insufficiently informed about the electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace John Kenyi, Executive Director of Strengthening Community Voices, spoke exclusively to The Dawn Newspaper on Thursday, stating that civil society organizations have observed that election preparations have not adequately reached communities nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From the civil society perspective, we have seen that much has not been put in place. Electoral preparation requires significant logistical effort and extensive civic education for the public. In terms of civic education, it has not been done enough,” Kenyi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that civic education activities have largely focused on urban areas, leaving many rural communities without sufficient information about the electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“A lot of the education has not even reached the grassroots. The recommendation from civil society is that civic education should not only be concentrated in urban settings like Torit, Malakal, and Juba, but should reach down to the grassroots,” she emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Kenyi, this limited access to civic education has left some members of the public without basic information about elections and their civic rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People don’t know. People are asking, ‘Who is the current president?’ One person was telling us she doesn’t know who the president is. This is a clear indicator that civic education has not taken place,” Kenyi stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that civil society organizations are making efforts to reach communities despite funding and logistical challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Civil society is trying to go to the grassroots, and we are also crippled by lack of funding. But we are trying because, at the end of the day, relying too much on external assistance won’t help our people,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyi stressed that civic education should help women and young people understand the various ways they can participate in the electoral process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Women and youth should know that they have various ways to participate. They can participate as voters, as candidates, or as civic and voter educators to inform communities about elections, the democratic process, and their civic rights,” she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She encouraged women aspiring to contest elections not to be discouraged by cultural and societal attitudes about women’s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Women should not underestimate themselves. We are human beings, and we are equal to men. Elections are meant for all of us to participate, so we should be prepared,” she asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyi called on women from political parties, civil society, and the business sector to support women seeking political leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is time for us to come together and support the women’s agenda as far as the election is concerned,” she urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dawn Newspaper also interviewed residents in Juba to gauge their views on the December election. Deng Deng Kuol expressed the citizens’ desire for a peaceful election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As citizens, we want the elections to be peaceful, transparent, and inclusive. We need enough civic education so that people understand how to register, vote, and participate in the electoral process. The people should also be given accurate information about the election,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Lual highlighted the importance of the election for South Sudan and called for greater women’s participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The upcoming elections are important for the country, but there are still many concerns among citizens. We want political leaders to respect the peace process and allow people, including women and youth, to participate freely,” she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lual, there is a need for security stability and freedom where citizens can express their views without fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
