A staggering 7.8 million people struggle daily to find enough food, while dwindling humanitarian resources threaten to cut off life-saving food and nutrition assistance to over one million vulnerable individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew Hollingworth, Assistant Executive Director for operations at the WFP, reiterated this warning on Wednesday, emphasizing that the country faces a deepening humanitarian crisis amidst declining humanitarian resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Simply put, South Sudan today is facing a collision of crises, just as humanitarian resources are starting to run out,&#8221; Hollingworth stated during the WFP Geneva briefing on South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He elaborated, &#8220;7.8 million people today, more than half the country&#8217;s population, struggle to find food each day. 2.2 million children and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding mothers require urgent nutrition support.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hollingworth stressed that the burden of supporting vulnerable communities cannot solely rest with humanitarian and development workers. He urged the Government of South Sudan to begin mobilizing its own funds to support its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If you just look at WFP, we have an $86 million gap right now, and a $416 million gap over the next six months. Without that, we can&#8217;t serve the refugees. We can&#8217;t serve the displaced,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The humanitarian community cannot replace the obligations that the government has for their own citizens. They need to take action as well to put their own finances, their own resources \u2014 that may mean money, but it could mean food that is grown in other areas of the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hollingworth also highlighted that humanitarian food, commercial food, and other materials transported along the River Nile face illegal checkpoints and taxation by soldiers throughout their journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that conflict, displacement, economic hardship, climate shocks, and the situation in neighboring Sudan are converging to push millions deeper into vulnerability across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Many have lost their homes. Most, if not all, have lost their livelihoods and belongings. Sadly, many have lost loved ones. And yet they are arriving, as I say, into communities that are already struggling significantly to feed themselves and look after themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hollingworth revealed that over the past three years, the World Food Programme and its partners have provided food, cash, and nutrition assistance to refugees and an increasing number of South Sudanese returnees integrating into vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;South Sudan is also bearing the consequences of the conflict in neighboring Sudan. Every week, around 3,000 refugees and returnees cross the border seeking safety, food, water, and shelter,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The reduced funding now is exacerbating all these other risks, all these other challenges, leaving fewer families with food assistance, fewer children with access to nutrition support, and fewer opportunities for communities to recover from repeated shocks.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a stark warning: South Sudan&#8217;s humanitarian crisis is escalating.
