{"id":878,"date":"2026-10-20T07:32:43","date_gmt":"2026-10-20T07:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=878"},"modified":"2026-10-20T07:32:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-20T07:32:44","slug":"conflict-displacement-leave-deep-mental-health-scars-across-south-sudan-health-minister-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=878","title":{"rendered":"Conflict, Displacement Leave Deep Mental Health Scars Across South Sudan, Health Minister Warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-58.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-58.png 624w, https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-58-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The government officials and partners pose for group photo after the celebration (credit: Jenifer James)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Jenifer James<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Caretaker Minister of Health, Dak Duop Bichiok, has warned that conflict, displacement, flooding and food insecurity have left deep psychological scars on communities, stressing that mental health care is essential to peace, national stability and economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking during the commemoration of World Mental Health Day 2026 on Monday, Bichiok said the government was working to address the country\u2019s mental health challenges through the National Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Strategic Plan for 2025\u20132029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This marks the beginning of the journey to address mental health in the country,&#8221; Bichiok stated, acknowledging the devastating toll of South Sudan&#8217;s overlapping crises on its people&#8217;s well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He elaborated, &#8220;As the Ministry of Health and government, we acknowledge the struggles South Sudan has faced due to conflict, displacement, floods, and food insecurity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bichiok explained that these crises have left both visible and invisible wounds within communities, underscoring the critical role of mental health care in fostering national stability, improving education, and boosting economic productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Addressing mental health is therefore not only a health priority, but it is also essential to peace, stability, education, and economic productivity,&#8221; he affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategic plan aims to integrate mental health services into 80 percent of primary healthcare centers, state hospitals, and county hospitals. Additionally, it seeks to establish suicide prevention services and recovery hotlines in every state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bichiok urged the government and its partners to maintain their commitment to implementing the plan and expanding nationwide access to mental health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Moses Mutebi Neanda, the WHO representative, reported that an estimated 1.2 million people in South Sudan require mental health support. This includes approximately 200,000 individuals with severe conditions and one million with mild to moderate conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neanda highlighted that stigma and limited access to services continue to deter many from seeking the necessary care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Despite the growing need, stigma and limited access to services continue to prevent many people from seeking and receiving support,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to figures from the 2020\u20132025 Health Sector Performance Report, mental health service coverage stood at a mere 0.4 percent, significantly below the targeted six percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neanda commended the Ministry of Health and its partners for their efforts to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare, train health workers, and expand mental health and psychosocial support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He advocated for stronger community-based care and the decentralization of mental health services to ensure vulnerable populations can access support without discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Today, let us move beyond awareness to action,&#8221; Neanda urged. &#8220;Let us listen to the voices of people with lived experience, involve them in decisions that affect their lives, and ensure that mental health services are available, accessible, and affordable to all.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He concluded that increased investment in mental health would yield immeasurable benefits for individuals, families, and communities, stating, &#8220;The cost of inaction is too high, but the benefits of action are immeasurable: healthier individuals, stronger families, and more resilient communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concurrently, Mark Ijjo of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Technical Working Group echoed the call for stronger mental health services. Citing figures from the South Sudan Health Cluster, he reiterated that approximately 1.2 million people need mental health support, with 204,000 suffering from severe conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ijjo revealed that only about one percent of those in need access services, resulting in an alarming treatment gap of approximately 99 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also referenced a 2025 survey by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, which recorded 507 suicides between January and August 2025, with nearly 60 percent reported in Central Equatoria State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Behind every statistic is a life, a family, and a community affected by loss,&#8221; Ijjo emphasized. &#8220;We need stronger early identification, suicide prevention, psychosocial support, and referral systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officials collectively urged government institutions, development partners, health workers, community leaders, and families to collaborate in reducing stigma, strengthening prevention efforts, and improving access to affordable mental health services across South Sudan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Caretaker Minister of Health, Dak Duop Bichiok, has warned that conflict, displacement, flooding and food insecurity have left deep psychological scars on communities, stressing that mental health care is essential to peace, national stability and economic development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":879,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_tdlc_coverage_id":0,"_tdlc_timeline_at":"","_tdlc_timeline_label":"","_tdno_assigned_editor":1,"_tdno_approval_notes":"","_thedawn_video_url":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[8,49],"tags":[38],"class_list":["post-878","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-news","tag-following"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
