{"id":948,"date":"2026-10-22T08:46:18","date_gmt":"2026-10-22T08:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=948"},"modified":"2026-10-22T08:46:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-22T08:46:19","slug":"western-equatoria-governor-calls-for-civilian-protection-as-unmiss-plans-road-rehabilitation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=948","title":{"rendered":"Western Equatoria Governor Calls for Civilian Protection as UNMISS Plans Road Rehabilitation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"594\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-85.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-949\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-85.png 594w, https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-85-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Western Equatoria State Caretaker Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa Meeting with UNMISS Team at State Secretariat on Wednesday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Waure Eddy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Western Equatoria State Caretaker Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa has called for inclusive dialogue, stronger civilian protection and increased humanitarian assistance as the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) plans to rehabilitate key roads and seeks additional troops to strengthen its operations in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issues were discussed during a meeting in Yambio on Wednesday between Governor Rimbasa and UNMISS officials, including Njoki Kinyanjui, Head of the UNMISS Yambio Field Office, and Emmanuel Dukudani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinyanjui said UNMISS plans to rehabilitate the Yambio\u2013Mundri road during the upcoming dry season before proceeding to the Yambio\u2013Tambura road. The works aim to improve access and make the routes more passable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said approximately 30 engineers were already in the area to support the basic rehabilitation works, emphasizing that the activities would not involve major construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinyanjui also stressed the importance of cooperation between UNMISS, the state government and local communities to ensure the safety of the engineers and identify suitable local sources of <em>maram<\/em>, a material used in road rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the planned road works, UNMISS has requested additional reserve platoons from its headquarters in Juba to strengthen civilian protection and patrol operations across Western Equatoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinyanjui explained that the mission\u2019s current deployment of approximately 384 troops limits its ability to conduct multiple long-distance patrols simultaneously. She said additional personnel would improve patrol coverage, enable quicker responses to security developments and help protect UNMISS activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, Governor Rimbasa called for inclusive, community-led dialogue involving church leaders, civil society organizations, traditional authorities, youth and women\u2019s representatives to address insecurity and strengthen peace across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also raised concerns about the security situation in Tambura, where some young people reportedly taken by force have expressed a willingness to return to civilian life but fear the surrender process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor called for safe arrangements to facilitate their return, including weapons handover, demobilization, psychosocial support and counseling.
