{"id":987,"date":"2026-10-27T07:36:16","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T07:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=987"},"modified":"2026-10-27T07:36:17","modified_gmt":"2026-10-27T07:36:17","slug":"financial-intelligence-unit-intensifies-fight-against-money-laundering-terrorist-financing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=987","title":{"rendered":"Financial Intelligence Unit Intensifies Fight Against Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-97.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-97.png 624w, https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-97-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-97-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Simon Deng<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commissioner of South Sudan\u2019s Financial Intelligence Unit, Bona Gong Ngeny, says the institution is intensifying efforts to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes through stronger national coordination and cooperation among relevant stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As I conclude, I affirm the commitment of the Financial Intelligence Unit to working collectively with all relevant stakeholders to strengthen the fight against money laundering and counter financial terrorist crimes,&#8221; Ngeny stated on Monday, during the opening of a five-day workshop on financial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ngeny emphasized that the FIU is reinforcing the principle of national coordination and cooperation, specifically designed to address South Sudan&#8217;s risks related to money laundering and terrorist financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added, &#8220;The contribution and trusted engagement with our participants will strengthen our national capacity to address money laundering and terrorist financing risks.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five-day training, held at the Imperial Hotel, brought together representatives from the government of South Sudan, the Financial Intelligence Unit,financial regulators, the banking sector, and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Mayen Majongdit,the caretaker Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, affirmed his ministry&#8217;s commitment to transparently utilize humanitarian funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As the humanitarian affairs family,I would like to assure my commitment and support to work together with the Financial Intelligence Unit to achieve the goal of transparency when it comes to the flow and use of funding,&#8221; said Majongdit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further explained, &#8220;We understand the role of the Financial Intelligence Unit is not just to monitor, but to inform and safeguard practices. The overall objective is to ensure that whenever funds are allocated, they are used for their intended purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fulco Ven Devender, Deputy Director of the Human Security Collective (HSC), highlighted their organization&#8217;s global work in fighting financial crimes, specifically their collaboration with non-governmental organizations in peacebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We work closely with the Financial Intelligence Unit to fight financial crimes; we are crime fighters. We work with NGOs,we work for women, youth,social work, and also for peacebuilding,&#8221; Devender stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued, &#8220;We are in an area of security and crime fighting; that is our role. We want to be the ones who can go into the villages, the communities, and do our work. We have to become experts in compliance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deng Athuai, a financial crimes analyst for the FIU, urged relevant stakeholders to sustain constructive dialogue and build confidence, particularly among the banking sector and non-governmental organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Measures must be taken to address identified risks, and that is the most important thing.We also focus on relationships between the banks and the NGOs. We certainly cannot underrate the aspect of financial integrity,&#8221; Athuai emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bruna Sivicio Izo, Chairperson of the South Sudan Bankers Association, stressed the critical importance of combating financial crimes and illicit flows in South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need to know the role of each and every institution. Money laundering and terrorist financing are not only done through the banks. Previously, the bank was targeted. Even when there is a sanction, the bank is targeted,&#8221; Izo noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She concluded, &#8220;We know the bank also needs training to comply. If the clients are not aware, the bank cannot do anything.
