The Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, has urged East African Community (EAC) member states to bolster regional cooperation, share financial technologies, and increase investment. These measures, he stated, would accelerate trade integration and unlock new economic opportunities across the region.
Othow made these remarks during a high-level EAC discussion organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The event took place on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday.
He emphasized the importance of learning from other countries’ experiences within the region to develop inclusive financial systems, enhance financial services, and strengthen economic cooperation among EAC member states.
“By working together and sharing technology, South Sudan is learning from the region’s experiences to build inclusive financial systems and invest in robust financial services,” Othow stated.
Othow reaffirmed South Sudan’s readiness to attract investment in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and technology.
He highlighted the significance of developing markets that cater to the needs and aspirations of its people.
He further stressed that regional cooperation and investment could help countries expand economic opportunities, improve connectivity, and strengthen their participation in regional and international markets.
According to Othow, discussions focused on strengthening regional value chains, drawing lessons from Southeast Asia, where inter-country cooperation has significantly expanded trade and investment opportunities.
The meeting also underscored the importance of technology sharing and robust financial services in supporting economic integration and enabling businesses to access wider regional markets.
For South Sudan, increased regional cooperation presents opportunities to develop its infrastructure, attract investment, and improve financial services as the country seeks to expand its role in the regional economy.
These discussions were part of broader engagements on regional economic cooperation during the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings, which convened financial and economic leaders to exchange views on development priorities and investment opportunities.
