The caretaker governor of Central Equatoria State, Gen. Augustino Jadalla Kamilo Wani, has ordered a swift investigation into the alleged repackaging of expired food commodities in Juba.
He has directed county authorities to pursue legal action against the company involved and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
In a statement posted on the gubernatorial Facebook page on Sunday, Governor Jadalla instructed the Caretaker Commissioner of Juba County to take legal measures against the company.
He specified that this action should be coordinated with relevant government bodies, including the South Sudan Bureau of Standards and security agencies, to ensure accountability.
Jadalla emphasized that this directive aligns with the Central Equatoria State Government’s commitment to public and food safety, ensuring all food items in markets meet consumption standards.
The investigation revealed that H Brothers General Trading and Investment Company Limited in Gumbo had repacked expired food commodities into new sacks, jerrycans, and boxes with altered expiry dates.
Governor Wani also urged the public to report any suspicious or expired goods found in markets and shops. He stressed that collective responsibility and coordination between the public and security organs are crucial for tracing traders and companies involved in selling expired goods.
The State Government reiterated that public health is a top priority and will not be taken lightly, pledging legal action against any company found repackaging expired goods.
The governor, Wani, led a joint inspection tour, which also included Kalisto Lado, the Caretaker Commissioner of Juba County. The team discovered large quantities of expired flour, biscuits, cooking oil, sugar, and other essential food items in Gumbo.
