The Government of South Sudan has called on Sudan to immediately cease attacks that endanger civilian lives following a deadly drone strike on Amiet Market in the disputed Abyei Area, which reportedly killed several people and injured several others.

The attack, allegedly carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces on October 19, 2026, struck multiple locations within the busy market, causing civilian casualties, injuries, and extensive property damage.

In a statement issued to the media on Tuesday, Ambassador Apuk Ayuel Mayen, spokesperson for South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned the reported attack and urged Sudan to refrain from actions that threaten the lives and safety of civilians.

“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack on Amiet Market,” Mayen said.

“The government extends its sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Mayen stated that following this incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Juba to convey the government’s strong protest and deep concern regarding the attack and its implications for the security of civilians and the stability of the Abyei area.

She said the Government of South Sudan called on neighboring Sudan to refrain from any actions that endanger the lives and property of civilians in the disputed Abyei region.

“The government further urges that any issues related to the Abyei area be addressed through established diplomatic channels and existing mechanisms for dialogue and engagement,” she said.

Mayen reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the protection of civilians and to the preservation of peace, security, and stability in the Abyei area.

“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan calls on the Government of the Republic of Sudan to take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” she said.

“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan remains fully committed to the principles of peaceful coexistence and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law and therefore urges the Government of Sudan to desist from such attacks and actions.”
