More than 1,000 leaders and members from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) and the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) have rejoined the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Juba. This political development occurs as the country prepares for upcoming elections.

SPLM Secretary-General Dr. Akol Paul Kordit announced the defections during a ceremony on Tuesday. He described the return of the opposition members as an opportunity to strengthen political unity, reconciliation, and stability in South Sudan.

“More than 1,000 leaders and members from the SPLM-IO and SSOA have officially rejoined the SPLM,” Kordit stated.

During the ceremony, where members declared their allegiance, Dr. Akol Paul welcomed them and reiterated his call for national reconciliation, unity, and political stability.

He emphasized the party’s readiness to receive former members and other South Sudanese willing to contribute to peacebuilding and national development.

“We maintain an open-door policy for all South Sudanese who wish to join us in promoting national unity, peacebuilding, and development,” Kordit affirmed.

SPLM Deputy Secretary-General Baba Medan also welcomed the former opposition members’ decision to return, stressing the importance of cooperation across political affiliations.

“Working together, regardless of our political backgrounds, is essential to addressing our national priorities and advancing democratic progress,” Medan said.

Nyachoap Thiang Louny, the SPLM Secretary for Administration and Finance and head of the organizing committee, commended the returning leaders.

“Our party provides a platform for political participation and an opportunity for citizens to contribute to national development,” Louny remarked.

SPLM Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs and Mobilization Majur Michael Achol briefed the gathering on the backgrounds of the returning members, noting that most had previously held senior executive and administrative positions within the SPLM-IO and SSOA.

Representing the returning SPLM-IO delegation, General Thomas Tut Deng presented a declaration of allegiance and expressed gratitude for the party’s reception.

“We appreciate the reception and reaffirm our commitment to working together under the SPLM platform,” Deng stated.

James Mawich Makuach, former minister of water resources and a representative of the returning SPLM-IO members, affirmed their commitment to national cohesion.

“Our decision reflects our commitment to national unity and working together toward a peaceful and stable South Sudan,” Makuach said.

The return of these former opposition leaders and members brings renewed attention to political realignments and reconciliation efforts as South Sudan prepares for upcoming elections.
