Civil Society Network Unveils New Leadership in Lakes State

The Civil Society Organization Network (CiSON) in Lakes State has inaugurated a new leadership in Rumbek, renewing its commitment to promoting peace, justice, human rights, accountability, and sustainable development across the state.

The leadership transition was held under the theme, “For Peace, Justice, Human Rights and Sustainable Development: Our Voice, Our Community, Our Future,” and brought together civil society representatives, government officials, development partners, and community members.

The ceremony featured the swearing-in of newly elected leaders, who took the constitutional oath before assuming office. Outgoing members were presented with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their service, while the incoming leadership received certificates of appointment.

Outgoing CiSON Chairperson Angelina Adhel Malual highlighted the critical role civil society organizations play in promoting peace, development, and community participation.

“Civil society organizations have a responsibility to stand with communities, amplify their voices, and contribute to addressing the challenges facing our society,” Adhel said.

Reflecting on her tenure, Adhel expressed pride in the achievements made during her leadership and urged the incoming team to build on the progress already achieved.

“I congratulate the new leadership and encourage them to protect what has been built, strengthen areas that need improvement, and continue working together in the spirit of service,” she added.

The newly inaugurated Chairperson, Daniel Laat Kon, called on development partners and other stakeholders to continue supporting civil society organizations, stressing the importance of maintaining a strong, united, and independent civic space.

Laat outlined the network’s vision of a peaceful, just, and prosperous Lakes State where citizens actively participate in governance and enjoy their fundamental rights.

“Our mission is to build a united, independent, and vibrant network that defends civic space, promotes human rights, holds leaders accountable, and empowers communities to build lasting peace,” he said.

Representing development partners, Diko Rose urged the government to provide a safe and enabling environment in which civil society organizations can operate freely and engage effectively with communities.

Rose also called on development partners to strengthen cooperation with civil society groups and continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens.

The Acting Governor of Lakes State, Isaac Luka Manga, congratulated the newly inaugurated leadership and encouraged stronger engagement between civil society organizations and the state government.

He said the relationship between government institutions and civil society should be based on mutual respect, dialogue, transparency, and a shared commitment to serving the people of Lakes State.

“The welfare and well-being of our people should remain the common objective of both government and civil society organizations,” Luka said, adding that the government remains willing to listen to concerns and recommendations raised by civic groups.

The inauguration concluded with renewed calls for closer collaboration among civil society organizations, government institutions, and development partners to advance peace, human rights, accountability, and sustainable development across Lakes State.

Participants described the event as an important milestone in strengthening civic engagement and promoting collective efforts to address the social and development challenges facing communities across the state.
