The Civil Society Organizations Network (CiSON) in Lakes State has called on newly appointed Caretaker Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor Deng to safeguard civic and political space and ensure an environment conducive to public participation ahead of the country’s elections.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Daniel Laat Kon, State Coordinator of the Community Empowerment Progress Organization and Chairperson of CiSON, congratulated Governor Rin on his appointment and commended the government for its commitment to peace.

Daniel called on the state government to protect citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and peaceful civic participation, saying these freedoms are essential for credible elections.

“Credible elections cannot happen when civic space is closed because democracy needs open debate,” Daniel said.

He urged the caretaker governor to publicly commit to protecting civic space and issue clear directives to security organs that civil society activities, peaceful assemblies, and media work are lawful and should be protected.

Daniel also called for an end to harassment and arbitrary arrests, particularly of citizens expressing political views or organizing civic education activities.

He further appealed to Governor Rin’s administration to guarantee civil society organizations unhindered access to counties and payams to conduct voter education, peace dialogues, and election observation.

Daniel proposed the establishment of a regular monthly forum bringing together the state government, security organs, civil society organizations, women’s groups, youth representatives, and the media.

He said such a forum would help build trust, promote dialogue, and provide a platform for addressing concerns related to civic and political participation.

Daniel also called for greater protection of the participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in political processes, urging that they be allowed to participate freely without fear, intimidation, or exploitation.

He assured the caretaker governor of CiSON’s support and cooperation in efforts to maintain peace and stability in Lakes State.

Daniel emphasized that protecting civic and political space should be viewed as part of promoting good governance and lasting peace, rather than as opposition to the government.

“We remain ready for constructive engagement,” Daniel concluded.
